Escoda-Sanahuja farms biodynamically in Conca de Barberà, Catalonia, and makes Nas del Gegant as a natural wine with no added sulphur. A blend including Merlot, Garnacha and the local Sumoll, it ages 10 months in stainless steel for a fresh, juicy red of red berries and herbs.
Description
Nas del Gegant is a natural red from Escoda-Sanahuja, in Conca de Barberà in Catalonia. The estate has farmed organically since 1997 and biodynamically since 2003, and from the 2007 harvest has made its wines without added sulphur. The winery belongs to the Mediterranean Biodynamic Work Group and to the Spanish natural wine producers' association. This bottling blends Merlot and Garnacha with Sumoll, a local Catalan variety that brings bright acidity and a savoury, herbal edge. The vineyards sit inland at altitude on calcareous soils, where cool nights preserve freshness and lift. Held in stainless steel for 10 months rather than oak, the wine keeps its fruit clean and direct, with no barrel spice to mask the terroir. The colour is bright ruby. The nose leads with red berries and cherry over plum, dried herbs and a peppery, earthy note. The palate is light to medium, with juicy fruit, fresh acidity and soft tannin. This is a wine to drink young and lightly chilled. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees. Good with charcuterie, roast chicken and tomato-based dishes.
