Alberto Nanclares makes A Graña in Rias Baixas from Albarino vines over thirty years old, worked with minimal intervention. Barrel ageing adds texture to a saline, citrus-driven white of lemon, white peach and a nutty, sea-spray finish.
Description
Nanclares y Prieto is a small, minimal-intervention producer in Cambados, in the heart of the D.O. Rias Baixas in Galicia. A Graña is made from Albarino vines aged over thirty years and reflects the Atlantic character of the region. This is a cool, wet, maritime climate on granite-influenced coastal soils, and that setting gives Albarino its hallmark high acidity and salinity. The old vines add concentration and depth that younger Albarino vineyards rarely reach. Unusually for the region, the wine is aged in barrel rather than only steel, which softens the grape's sharp edges and adds a fine texture through oxygen exchange and lees contact, while the large old wood keeps oak flavour in check. The colour is pale straw with golden tints. The nose is precise, with lemon and white peach over citrus peel, a clear saline note and a hint of almond from the barrel. The palate is dry and mineral, the old-vine concentration giving weight while the Atlantic acidity keeps it taut, finishing long and slightly salty. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees. It is built for seafood.
