Description
Náiades is a white from Bodegas Naia at La Seca, in the heart of D.O. Rueda, made entirely from Verdejo. What sets it apart is the fruit source: old, pre-phylloxera vines more than 100 years old, planted on small parcels of sandy soil. Sand is a natural barrier to phylloxera, which is why these ungrafted vines survive, and it drains freely to give low yields and concentrated fruit. Rueda has a harsh continental climate with a swing of up to 50 degrees between winter and summer, and a wide day-to-night range in the growing season that preserves acidity and Verdejo's herbal, fennel-like aromatics. The harvest is done by hand at night to keep the fruit cool and fresh. Unlike the crisp, tank-fermented style of most Rueda, this wine is barrel-fermented and aged seven months in French oak. Fermenting in barrel integrates the oak and, with lees ageing, builds a creamy texture and a nutty, savoury complexity while keeping the wine dry and structured. Expect a pale gold colour, a nose of white peach, pear and dried herbs, and a broad palate with almond, vanilla, citrus peel and a long finish. Serve at 11 to 13 degrees.

Additional information
Its weight and texture suit grilled and baked white fish, roast chicken and pork loin. A mature hard cheese also works with the nutty, oak-framed palate.
