Description
Amahagan World Malt is a blended malt produced at Nagahama Distillery, a small pot-still house opened in 2016 in a brewpub beside Lake Biwa in Shiga prefecture. The World designation reflects the blend's honest makeup: Nagahama malt is vatted with imported whisky from other regions, and no single-origin provenance is claimed. This NAS bottling from 2020 was released specifically for the Japanese domestic market at 47%.
The cask programme for this edition centres on Pedro Ximenez sherry wood throughout maturation. PX casks are notably sweet and intense, giving the whisky a dense, syrupy character built around dried figs, dark raisins, chocolate and a dark caramel sweetness. The concentration typical of PX maturation makes this one of the richer, more dessert-like expressions in the Amahagan range, with a finish that lingers with dark fruit and gentle spice.
