Anselmo Mendes makes this Vinho Verde from the native Loureiro grape in Monção, in the Minho. Rested three months on its lees, it stays elegant and fresh, showing white flowers, citrus and green apple. Vegan and sustainably farmed.
Description
Anselmo Mendes is one of Portugal's leading white winemakers, known for his work with the native Loureiro, Alvarinho and Avesso varieties in Vinho Verde. Muros Antigos Loureiro comes from young vineyards in Monção, in the northern Minho, where a cool, wet, Atlantic-influenced climate and granite soils give the region its bright acidity and low natural alcohol. Loureiro takes its name from the laurel and is prized for its floral aromatics. The wine spends three months on its lees, where the settled yeast slowly breaks down and adds a little body and a savoury depth while keeping the fruit crisp and the wine fresh. Farming is respectful of the land and the wine is suitable for vegans. It is pale and bright. The nose is led by white flowers, lifted by lemon, green apple and white peach. The palate is light and dry, with a keen citrus acidity, a faint saline note and a clean, refreshing close, all at a gentle alcohol level. This is a wine for drinking young and cool. Serve at 8 to 10 degrees in a white wine glass. It works as an aperitif and with light seafood.
