Muriel was founded in 1929 in El Ciego, in La Rioja Alavesa, and over the decades has built a reputation as one of Rioja's serious rosado producers. This wine blends Garnacha Tinta and Tempranillo, two varieties that give red Rioja its backbone but here are pressed early for a pale, fresh style. The vineyards of La Rioja Alavesa sit on calcareous clay soils at altitude, with cool nights that hold the natural acidity and lift the aromatics. The fruit is fermented at controlled low temperatures to protect the primary character, then rested for about a month on its fine lees. That short lees contact adds a touch of weight and a rounder texture without masking the fruit. The wine is pale pink. The nose leads with red berries, cherry and red currant over a light floral note, with a clean citrus edge. The palate is dry and crisp, medium in weight, with bright acidity carrying a fresh, slightly mineral finish. Serve chilled at around 8 to 10 degrees. It works as an aperitif and alongside lighter dishes, from salads to roast chicken and white fish.
