Mullineux makes this Swartland Syrah from a single schist-and-roundstone site north of Cape Town. Old vines on granite and shale give a dark, peppery wine with plum, black olive and a smoky, mineral grip after barrel ageing.
Description
Mullineux and Leeu is a leading Swartland producer founded by Chris and Andrea Mullineux, working old, dry-farmed vines north of Cape Town. The Schist Roundstone Syrah comes from a single site whose name describes the soil: weathered schist with rounded stones, set among the granite and shale that define the region. These poor, free-draining soils and old bush vines give very low yields and small, thick-skinned berries, so colour, tannin and dark fruit are concentrated. The hot, dry Swartland summers are moderated by cooler nights and Atlantic influence, ripening the Syrah fully while holding the natural acidity and the peppery, savoury character of the grape. The wine is fermented with native yeast, often with whole bunches for added lift and fine tannin, then barrel aged in older French oak so oxygen softens the structure without adding obvious new-wood flavour. It is vegan and farmed sustainably. The colour is deep violet. The nose shows dark plum, black pepper, black olive and crushed stone with liquorice and smoke. The palate is full bodied and intense, firm and mineral, finishing long and savoury. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees with grilled meat or game.
