Description
Muga Blanco is made by Bodegas Muga in the Barrio de la Estacion in Haro, Rioja Alta, a district famous for its cluster of historic wineries. It is a Rioja blend led by Viura and Malvasia with Garnacha Blanca, grown on clay and limestone soils. Malvasia lends aroma and fruit while Viura brings structure and freshness. The wine is barrel fermented and then aged for four months on its lees in barrel. Fermenting in oak rather than tank binds the wood more subtly into the wine, while the extended lees contact releases mannoproteins that build a rounder, creamier texture and add a fine, savoury complexity. Rioja Alta sits at altitude with a cool, part Atlantic climate that keeps acidity firm and supports this fuller, oak influenced style. The colour is bright straw. The nose shows fresh green apple and pear with citrus, white flowers and a light note of vanilla and toast from the barrel. The palate is broad and textured, with the lees weight balanced by a firm, fresh line and a clean finish. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees in a white glass. It suits richer fish, poultry and nutty cheeses.
