Telmo Rodríguez makes MR Mountain from Moscatel de Alejandría grown on the Málaga slopes of Andalusia. Naturally sweet rather than fortified, aged ten months in stainless steel on its lees, it shows apricot, orange peel and honeyed white peach.
Description
MR Mountain is the work of Telmo Rodríguez, made from Moscatel de Alejandría in the D.O. Málaga-Sierras de Málaga in Andalusia. The vines sit on the warm hillsides above the coast, where strong Mediterranean sun ripens the aromatic Moscatel fully while altitude and sea air keep acidity intact. This is a naturally sweet wine rather than a fortified one: the grape sugars carry the wine, with no spirit added. After a gentle pressing the wine spends ten months in stainless steel resting on its fine lees, which softens the texture and adds a subtle savoury depth without masking the grape's floral character. The result is pale gold and only lightly sweet. The nose is classic Moscatel, with apricot, orange peel, melon and white flowers over a honeyed background. On the palate it is silky but fresh, the residual sugar balanced by clean citrus acidity that keeps the finish bright rather than cloying. Aromatic and easy, it is a sweet wine built for the table as much as the dessert course. Serve chilled at around 8 to 10 degrees in a white wine glass. It works with fresh fruit tarts, almond pastries and a wedge of mild blue cheese.
