A pot-still Mount Gay single barrel from 2000, vanilla and caramel meeting tropical fruit over toasted oak with a dry, tarry edge, aged twenty years in ex-bourbon and bottled unsweetened at cask strength, 53.2%, by 1423.
Description
1423 selects this single barrel under their S.B.S line, the detail-obsessed Single Barrel Selection from Denmark, drawing on Mount Gay, the heritage Barbados name that traces its deed to 1703. At twenty years old, from the 2000 vintage and bottled unsweetened at full cask strength, it is a rougher and more characterful Mount Gay than the standard range, with no added sugar.
Unusually for the island this is pure pot still rather than the typical pot-and-column blend, matured in ex-bourbon oak. The nose runs woody and toasted with vanilla and caramel, the palate brings peaches, orange peel and tropical fruit alongside herbs and a creeping note of tar, and the finish turns dry, toasted and spicy over roasted wood. At 53.2% it takes time and a few drops of water to settle, landing as a dry, oak-forward Barbados rum for those who lean toward the firmer end of the style.
