A navy strength take on Mount Gay Eclipse, keeping the familiar banana, brown sugar, chocolate and burnt-sugar caramel but cranking the power and peppery spice, unsweetened and built for bigger cocktails at 57.1%.
Description
Mount Gay markets itself as the world's oldest commercial rum distillery, its deed dated 1703, and Eclipse is its everyday St Lucy blend of pot and column still rum. This limited edition pushes that blend up to navy strength, holding the recognisable character while adding muscle, aimed at drinkers who like the Eclipse profile but want more punch in a glass.
Molasses-based and oak-aged in the house style, typically ex-bourbon barrels, it carries banana, burnt sugar and caramel on the nose, then brown sugar, chocolate and peppery spice across the palate. The finish stays peppery and dry with dark chocolate, oak and barrel, and there is no added sugar to round it off. There is surprisingly little burn for the strength, which makes it a powerful mixer with enough balance to sip neat for those who want to.
