Motor Callet is a fresh Mallorcan red from 4 Kilos, built on the island’s native Callet and Fogoneu. Made without oak in clay and steel vats and bottled at just eleven percent, it shows bright red berries, herbs and a savoury, Mediterranean lift.
Description
Motor Callet is made by 4 Kilos, the Mallorcan winery founded in 2006 by Francesc Grimalt and Sergi Caballero at Felanitx, under the Vino de la Tierra Mallorca designation. The wine is a vegan, low intervention red built on two grapes native to the island, Callet and Fogoneu, both naturally low in colour and alcohol and well suited to the warm Mediterranean climate. Picked early to keep freshness, the wine sits at a light eleven percent. Vinification and ageing avoid oak entirely, taking place over a few months in clay vats and stainless steel: the clay allows a slow, gentle micro-oxygenation that rounds the texture, while the steel locks in the bright, primary fruit. The result is a pale to medium ruby red. The nose shows fresh red berries, cherry, redcurrant and dried herbs, with a peppery, earthy edge typical of these island varieties. The palate is light and juicy, with low tannin, lively acidity and a savoury, saline finish. This is a red to serve cool, around 13 to 14 degrees, almost like a white in its flexibility. It works as an aperitif and alongside lighter dishes such as roast chicken, grilled pork and Mediterranean salads.
