4 Kilos and Nacho Martínez make this Mallorca rosé from Syrah with Callet and Premsal Blanco, off vineyards ringed by Mediterranean forest. Nine months in French oak give strawberry and raspberry fruit a herbal, salty edge and a fresh, wild character.
Description
Moteur Pistache is a collaboration between the Mallorcan winery 4 Kilos and Nacho Martínez, made in Felanitx on the island's southeast. It draws mainly on a Syrah vineyard set within Mediterranean forest, supported by the native Callet and the white Premsal Blanco. The maritime island climate, with sea breezes and scrubland all around, marks the wine with a herbal, saline character that sits alongside its fruit. After fermentation the wine spends nine months in French oak barrels, an unusually long ageing for a rosé that builds texture and a light spice while the used wood adds structure rather than overt oak flavour. It pours a bright pink and shows juicy strawberry and raspberry, a whisper of Mediterranean herbs and white peach, with a vanilla and saline lift from the barrel and the coast. The palate is fresh, dry and lively, fruit driven but savoury, with a wild, herb edged finish. Serve it at 10 to 12 degrees in a white wine glass. The body from the oak ageing makes it a flexible food rosé rather than a simple poolside pour.
