Description
Gordon & MacPhail of Elgin, whose deep stocks include some of the oldest Mortlach in existence, selected this 54 Year Old, a 1954 from cask 493. Founded in Dufftown in 1823, Mortlach owes its rich, meaty weight to worm-tub condensers and the unusual 2.81 distillation devised by Alexander Cowie.
Fifty-four years in Oloroso drew the robust Mortlach spirit to a profound depth, long oxidation and heavy evaporation over figgy dried fruit, leather and old wood.
At 43% it shows dried fruit, leather and polished oak carried on the heavy Dufftown body. A meaty, muscular Mortlach.
