Description
Gordon & MacPhail, the Elgin house founded in 1895 and a long-standing Mortlach bottler, bottles this 43 Year Old, a 1978 vintage, cask 996, an outturn of 99 bottles. Mortlach, owned by John Walker & Sons from 1923, makes a dense, sulphury Speyside through worm tubs and its singular 2.81-times distillation.
By forty-three years Mortlach's weighty make had reached the edge of its life, meaty depth turned to leather, beeswax and dried fruit, the tannins held short of bitterness.
At 47.4% it shows citrus, honey and an oak-framed depth over the oily Mortlach weight, undiluted. A muscular Speyside malt.
