Description
Gordon & MacPhail, the Elgin house founded in 1895 and a long-standing Mortlach bottler, selected this 43 Year Old: a 1978 vintage from cask 992, an outturn of 96 bottles. Mortlach, the first licensed distillery in Dufftown, runs a 2.81-times distillation and worm-tub condensers that give the heavy, meaty spirit fans call the Beast of Dufftown.
Across forty-three years heavy evaporation and slow oxidation concentrated the rich, meaty spirit, leather and old-wood depth as the strength drifted lower.
At 50.4% it shows honey, dried fruit and a leathery depth over the meaty Mortlach body, undiluted. A muscular Speyside malt.
