Description
From The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, which codes its bottlings rather than naming distilleries, 76 being Mortlach, this 18 Year Old is a 2006 vintage, an outturn of 210 bottles. Mortlach is Speyside's great meaty malt, its 1823 Dufftown stillhouse using worm tubs and a 2.81 distillation that defies the region's lighter norm.
Across eighteen years the sherry's melanoidins and growing oxidation built dried fruit, nutmeg and leather into the gamey, savoury spirit.
At 52.5% it shows dried fruit, chocolate and a nutty, sherried depth on Mortlach's muscular frame, undiluted. Big, savoury and full-bodied.
