Description
Morgen Long is the Oregon estate of Seth Morgen, who focuses on Chardonnay from the Willamette Valley in the cool, wet north-west of the United States. The valley lies close to the Pacific, and coastal air moderates the summer heat and gives a long, gentle growing season that ripens the fruit slowly and keeps the acidity fresh. The wine takes its mineral, savoury character from the region's soils, a mix of ancient marine sediments and volcanic basalt that suit Chardonnay well. The grapes are fermented and aged for twelve months in French oak barrels from the Allier forest, a source prized for its tight grain and restrained flavour. Slow oxygen exchange through the wood, along with a long rest on the lees, adds texture and weight, and a partial malolactic conversion softens the acidity and gives a creamy, buttery note. In the glass it is pale gold, with white peach, lemon, pear and hazelnut, over a gentle toasted, spiced character from the oak. The palate is full but taut, with a stony mineral line and a long finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees.

Additional information
Pairs with roast chicken, creamy pasta and richer fish such as halibut or salmon. The oak and lees weight suit roast pork and hard nutty cheeses, while the mineral acidity keeps it fresh alongside buttery sauces.
