Description
Morasinsi is a natural-wine producer in Puglia, southern Italy, and Quarantacalici Rosso is its everyday red, offered in a five-litre bag in box built for easy, unpretentious drinking. It is a single-varietal Nero di Troia, the native Puglian grape, grown on the warm limestone plains of the region where generous sunshine ripens the fruit and the calcareous soil keeps a thread of freshness. This is deliberately made in a light, immediate style, with no oak ageing and a modest 12 per cent alcohol, so the fruit stays bright and the wine drinks easily on its own or with food. Natural winemaking with minimal additions keeps it fresh and unfussy, and the bag in box protects the wine from oxidation once opened, holding it in good condition for several weeks. The colour is a bright, light ruby. The nose is fresh and lively, with cherry, ripe strawberry and gentle floral notes. The palate is light bodied, with juicy red fruit, soft tannin, good acidity and a clean, easy finish. Serve lightly cool at 14 to 15 degrees. It suits pizza, pasta, charcuterie and roast poultry.
