Description
Piana dei Sassi is an Aglianico rosé from Morasinsi, a 10-hectare family estate run by Sveva and Peter in the Alta Murgia of Puglia, in southern Italy, farmed by the principles of regenerative organic agriculture. Aglianico is a dark, structured southern Italian grape more often made into bold red wine, and as a rosé it gives more colour, body and grip than the usual pink varieties. The Murgia is a high limestone plateau, and these calcareous soils combined with the warm southern climate and cool nights give ripe fruit balanced by firm acidity. The wine is made naturally and aged for around four months in old stone presses and concrete vessels, which are inert and allow a slow, gentle exchange of oxygen that softens the wine and builds texture without adding any oak flavour, letting the grape and place show through. At 11.5 percent it is moderate in alcohol. The colour is a deep cherry-red, with aromas of ripe strawberry, red cherry and plum over black pepper, dried herbs and a savoury, earthy note. The palate is dry, textured and savoury, with the weight to drink almost like a light red. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
