Bodegas Montecillo, founded in 1870, builds this Rioja rosé from Tempranillo and the rare white Tempranillo Blanco. The pairing of red and white grapes gives a pale, fresh wine of strawberry, red cherry and a delicate floral lift.
Description
Bodegas Montecillo is one of Rioja's historic houses, established in 1870 and now with over 150 years behind it. This rosado is unusual in its blend, marrying classic red Tempranillo with Tempranillo Blanco, a white mutation of the grape revived in the region. Rioja's continental climate, with hot summers tempered by cool nights off the surrounding sierras, preserves the natural acidity that defines a fresh young rosé. The fruit is pressed early to keep the colour pale and the phenolics light, and fermentation at low temperature in stainless steel protects the primary aromatics and the crisp fruit character. The white grape adds citrus and a floral edge to the red grape's berry core. The colour is a clear pale pink. The nose shows fresh strawberry, red cherry and white flowers, with a faint pastry note from the lees. The palate is dry and bright, with red currant and lemon framed by clean acidity, finishing clean and savoury. Serve at 8 to 10 degrees in a white wine glass as an aperitif or alongside lighter dishes.
