Luberri makes Monje Amestoy Reserva in Rioja from one hundred percent Tempranillo, aged sixteen months in a mix of French and American oak. A classic Rioja Reserva of red fruit, leather, sweet spice and supple, savoury structure.
Description
Luberri makes Monje Amestoy Reserva in Rioja from a single variety, Tempranillo, in a style that balances classic tradition with a more modern polish. Rioja's continental climate, tempered by Atlantic influence, gives Tempranillo its bright red fruit and the acidity it needs for long ageing. The wine spends sixteen months in oak, using barrels up to six years old, half French and half American. Older barrels exert a gentler influence, contributing texture and slow oxygen exchange to soften tannin without overwhelming the fruit with fresh wood, while the French and American split balances finer spice against coconut and vanilla. A further rest in bottle before release integrates the components. Expect a deep cherry red with aromas of red and black berries, leather, tobacco, sweet spice and a vanilla edge from the oak. The palate is medium to full, supple and savoury, with fine tannin and a long, balanced finish at 14 percent. It has the structure to develop further in bottle but drinks well now. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees and decant for half an hour. It suits roast lamb, beef and grilled pork.
