Codorniu make this organic Penedes red from Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha and Syrah. The three grapes give blackcurrant, ripe raspberry and a peppery, spiced edge over a full, structured palate.
Description
Codorniu produce this organic red in D.O. Penedes, the varied Catalan region inland from Barcelona that rises from the coast to higher, cooler vineyards. The blend draws on three complementary grapes. Cabernet Sauvignon brings blackcurrant fruit, firm tannin and structure, Garnacha adds ripe red berry fruit and warmth, and Syrah contributes colour, pepper and a savoury spice. Penedes has a Mediterranean climate tempered by altitude, and the cooler nights at the higher sites help the grapes keep freshness alongside full ripeness. Organic farming keeps the focus on healthy fruit and living soils. The wine sees a period in oak, which softens the tannins through gentle oxygen exchange and folds in toast and spice to support the fruit. The result is a deeply coloured red with plum, blackcurrant and raspberry on the nose, lifted by black pepper and a touch of liquorice. The palate is full and structured, with grippy but ripe tannins and a long, savoury finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees and decant for half an hour. It is built for grilled and roast meats.
