A 21 year old Nicaraguan ron from the Mombacho distillery, built on column-distilled molasses spirit and finished in sherry casks, the kind of long-aged Central American pour that typically trades on vanilla, dried fruit and soft oak at an easy 40%.
Description
Mombacho is a small Nicaraguan house working in the Spanish style, where the character comes from the barrel rather than a heavy spirit. This expression carries a stated 21 years on column-distilled molasses rum, then a finishing period in sherry casks that, in the house style, usually layers dried fruit and a little nutty richness over the base.
Nicaraguan ron of this type tends to read soft and rounded, with vanilla, toffee and gentle baking spice from long oak contact. Bottled at 40%, it should sit on the smoother, after-dinner side of the rum shelf. Added sugar is not disclosed for this release, so expect approachable rather than bone-dry.
