A seven year Indian molasses rum from Old Monk at 42.8%, column distilled and sweet, with vanilla, maple, raisin and caramel over a hint of smoke, a budget pour that finds its feet in cola rather than neat.
Description
Old Monk Supreme 7 Years Old from Mohan Meakin is a long running Indian molasses rum, column distilled and built for everyday drinking at a low price. The nose carries molasses, vanilla, maple and dried fruit, sweet and easygoing.
Matured in ex bourbon wood and bottled at 42.8%, it shows woody raisin, vanilla and caramel on the palate before a mild, dry finish. Added sugar is unstated, but the sweet, somewhat confected profile is clear, and the flavours read bold rather than refined. This is rum that works best mixed, particularly with cola and a squeeze of lime, where its sweetness and vanilla can carry, or in a warming grog. As an inexpensive, characterful mixer it has a following, but drinkers looking for a neat sipping rum with finesse will want to set their sights elsewhere.
