Description
Miyagikyo 9 Years Old 2002 is a single cask single malt from Nikka's Miyagi Prefecture distillery, distilled in 2002 and bottled in 2012 from a single refill butt at cask strength for the European market. Nine years is on the younger end for a distillery whose standard releases are aged 10 to 15 years, and the refill cask means the wood influence is measured rather than dominant, allowing the distillery's house character to lead.
Fresh and cooked fruit, honey and vanilla emerge clearly from the bourbon-seasoned wood, with old wood adding structure toward the finish. At 62%, the spirit is intense and vivid, the high strength typical of undiluted single cask bottlings from this era of the Miyagikyo range. The refill butt preserves the natural fruitiness of the Miyagi Prefecture distillery at a notably young and energetic stage.
