Viñas del Vero makes this Somontano white from old vine Garnacha Blanca in the Secastilla valley, planted above 700 metres on stony ground. Four months in French oak round it out, showing ripe pear, white peach and fennel with a waxy texture.
Description
Viñas del Vero makes this white in D.O. Somontano, in the foothills of the Aragonese Pyrenees, from Garnacha Blanca grown in the Secastilla valley. The valley has its own Mediterranean microclimate and holds very old vines planted above 700 metres on stony hillsides, where the altitude gives cool nights that keep the wine fresh and the poor, well drained soils keep yields low and the fruit concentrated. The wine ages four months in French oak, a short spell that rounds the palate and adds a light spice while leaving the fruit in charge. It is pale gold in the glass, with ripe pear, white peach, fennel and a faint toast from the oak. The palate is medium bodied and broad, with orchard and stone fruit and a waxy Garnacha Blanca texture held by fresh mountain acidity through a long finish. This is a white with the weight to sit at the table rather than an aperitif. Serve it at 10 to 12 degrees. It suits roast chicken, grilled white fish, roasted root vegetables and hard cheeses.
