An 11 Year Old single cask Port Mourant off the double wooden pot still, raw and oily with caramel, smoke and a glue-like ester edge over salty, vegetal wood, bottled unsweetened at a fierce 61.2%.
Description
A single cask Port Mourant 2010 bottled for the Milano Rum Festival, drawn off the legendary double wooden pot still built from greenheart that no modern still can replicate. Port Mourant is the heaviest and most polarising of Guyana's heritage marques, and this 11 year old shows its rawer, younger side, the ester-driven funk still prominent.
Maturated from molasses and finished in port wood at 61.2%, it noses on caramel, wood, smoke and a sharp alcoholic lift, then turns oily and glue-like on the palate over more caramel, with a dry, salty, vegetal finish of wood. Unsweetened and bottled at cask strength, it leans into Port Mourant's pungent, varnish-edged character rather than its rounder chocolate side, and clearly benefits from time and water to settle. A robust, uncompromising PM for drinkers who seek out the still's wilder register.
