Description
Micil Madeira Island is a single pot still whiskey released by the Galway house from stock distilled at the Great Northern Distillery in Dundalk, Co. Louth, Batch 1/22 running to 1,754 bottles in 2022. The pot still style, a mash of malted and unmalted barley, is Ireland's own category, and Micil dresses it distinctively.
Maturation combined ex-bourbon casks with peated quarter casks and Madeira wood, so the hallmark pepper and ginger of pot still spirit picks up a whisper of smoke, rare in Irish whiskey, alongside the baked orange and burnt sugar of the island wine. Bottled at 46%, it is a layered, slightly maverick take on the category, small casks and peat pushing against the honeyed Madeira sweetness.
