Michelini i Mufatto make this Bierzo red from a field blend led by Mencía, grown under sustainable farming in Castilla y León. Twelve months in oak give a red of dark berry fruit, black pepper and a stony, earthy edge.
Description
Michelini i Mufatto are a family who farm across both hemispheres, and in the Bierzo region of north west Spain they work old vineyards planted to a mix of native varieties. Encinado is a field blend led by Mencía with Brancellao, Merenzao, Godello and Palomino, all picked and fermented together as the vineyard grows them. Bierzo sits in a sheltered basin where Atlantic and continental influences meet, and the slate and clay soils give Mencía its characteristic freshness and mineral grip. The wine ages twelve months in oak barrels, the gentle oxygen exchange rounding the tannins while keeping the fruit and acidity intact. Sustainable farming preserves the older vines that drive the wine's concentration. It pours a deep, bright ruby. The nose offers red berries, cherry and plum with black pepper, dried herbs and an earthy, stony note. The palate is medium bodied and savoury, with fine tannins, bright acidity and a long mineral finish. Serve at 16 degrees, decanting briefly if young. It suits roast meats, game and earthy dishes.
