Andrea Mufatto and Gerardo Michelini make A Merced from native Mencía in D.O. Bierzo, farmed sustainably from old village vineyards. Aged eight months in used French oak, it is fresh and low in alcohol, with red berries, pepper and a slate minerality.
Description
Michelini i Mufatto make A Merced in D.O. Bierzo, in Castilla y León, from the native Mencía grape, working with local winemaker Javier González. Argentine winemakers Andrea Mufatto and Gerardo Michelini left their home country and settled on forgotten old vineyards in a small Bierzo village, farming them sustainably to show the place as naturally as possible. Bierzo's valley floors and slopes carry slate and clay soils, and the cooler mountain influence keeps alcohol moderate, here just 12.7 per cent, while preserving the bright acidity and perfume Mencía is known for. Old vines give depth without heaviness. The wine spends eight months in used French oak, chosen so the barrels add structure and a little air without imposing wood flavour, keeping the fruit fresh and direct. The colour is bright medium ruby. The nose shows red berries, cherry and plum with crushed pepper, dried herbs and a stony, slate edge. The palate is light to medium bodied, fresh and savoury, with fine tannin and a mineral finish. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees, lightly chilled if you prefer. It suits pork, poultry and mushroom dishes.
