Mhoba Umganu Brandy Cask is a single cask agricole style rum from Mhoba in Mpumalanga, South Africa, bottled for the La Maison du Whisky New Vibrations collection in 2023. South Africa sits outside the protected agricole appellations, so this is cane juice rum in spirit if not in legal name, and Mhoba has built a reputation for pushing the style to its raw extreme.

Working from fresh cane juice on a pot still, the distillery keeps esters and fermentation character high, then finished this lot in an Umganu brandy cask. The outcome is fierce and unpolished at full strength, leading with fermented fruit, fresh sugarcane and an earthy, grassy edge that recalls Haitian clairin, then turning salty, spicy, vegetal and faintly bitter. This is one for drinkers who already chase young, high ester cane spirit and want it loud, ideally with rest in the glass.
