MHOBA has made a name as one of the first distilleries to bring pure pot still, sugar-cane-juice rum out of South Africa, and this single cask Select Reserve shows exactly why it draws comparisons to the funkier Caribbean houses. Distilled from fresh cane juice rather than molasses, it carries the grassy, vegetal snap of an agricole alongside an ester driven fruitiness more often heard in Jamaica.
The spirit comes off a pot still and was raised in a French oak cask, which layers woody chocolate, caramel, leather and a dry, spicy grip over the fresh cane core. At 65% and only a year in wood, the alcohol runs hot and the flavours run wild, so a splash of water helps unpack the esters and the green cane freshness underneath. It is bottled without added sugar, intense and uncompromising, best taken slowly.
