MHOBA is a small South African distillery making rum from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice on its own pot stills, working in an agricole-style tradition far from the Caribbean, and this Pot Stilled High Ester Rum 2022 is a single cask bottled at full cask strength.
This is built for funk: long fermentation and pot distillation push the esters high, giving a savoury, briny profile rather than a sweet one. The nose carries green olive, smoke, brine and a floral edge, the palate is olive-driven, creamy and salty, and the finish stays on olive, butter and ester.
