A bold cask-strength Mhoba cane-juice rum at 60.9%, dry and powerful with esters, glue and roasted wood over overripe banana, leather, vanilla and caramel, best slow-sipped with a drop of water.
Description
MHOBA KIGELIA Foundations 2024 is a cane-juice rum from the Mhoba distillery in South Africa, a maker known for bold, funky, high-proof spirit. Made from fresh sugarcane juice and bottled as a single cask at cask strength, this is firmly agricole-style rather than rhum agricole, and at 60.9% it is built for power rather than ease.
A bourbon-cask maturation gives it a drier, woodier frame than some Mhoba bottlings while keeping the house funk intact. The nose leads with esters, glue and a plastic-tinged intensity alongside vanilla and caramel, then the palate turns woody, buttery and roasted with spice, overripe banana and leather, finishing on roasted wood, caramel and honey. To be honest about it, this is a wild, rustic rum, the high strength asking for a few drops of water. It rewards experienced drinkers who like funky, high-ester, high-proof cane-juice rum and want a drier, bourbon-cask take on the style, slow-sipped.
