Description
Mhoba Indlovu is a South African cane juice rum, agricole in spirit, from a distillery that has built its reputation on intensely funky pot still spirit. Released as a single cask in La Maison du Whisky's New Vibrations collection and matured in bourbon and brandy casks, it pairs Mhoba's ester driven character with a double cask influence, bottled unsweetened at a robust 58.5%.
Distilled on a pot still from fresh pressed sugar cane juice for maximum aromatic weight, it opens with the gluey, varnish edged funk and esters that link it to heavy Jamaican rum, then layers in grilled pineapple and tropical fruit, smoke, liquorice, honeyed sweetness and earthy wood. The brandy and bourbon casks bring spice and a fuller body while the funk stays front and centre. Expressive and well balanced with the alcohol nicely integrated, it is one for drinkers who relish bold, high ester cane spirit and want a smoky, savoury twist.
