MHOBA Bourbon Cask Rum Select Reserve 2023

A Select Reserve single cask from MHOBA, the South African distillery making genuine cane-juice rum well outside the traditional agricole regions. It cannot use the protected term, so this is best called agricole-style: fresh-pressed sugar-cane juice, pot distilled for weight and character, matured in ex-bourbon oak and bottled unsweetened at a powerful 59%.

The pot still and full strength give it real intensity. The nose mixes wood and light esters with caramel, citrus and tropical fruit, and a solventy lift signals the funkier side of the spirit. The palate is woody and caramel-rich with vanilla and a solvent edge, and the finish stays woody, spicy and roasted with tropical fruit returning. There is smoke, ester and sheer power here, a distinctive cane-juice rum with personality rather than polish. Unsweetened and cask strength, it rewards patience and a drop of water, one for drinkers chasing characterful, off-the-beaten-path rum.
