MHOBA American Oak Aged Rum 2019 is a single cask, pure cane juice rum from South Africa, pot distilled in the agricole spirit although the agricole name belongs to the French islands. MHOBA works from fresh pressed cane and has built a following for vivid, characterful rum, and this single cask sits at the gentler, more accessible end of its range.
The nose is estery, fruity and woody, with vanilla, chocolate and a hint of light smoke, while the palate is milder and whisky like, opening sweet and vanilla led before turning drier, woody and spicy, with a peppery, cane forward finish. The pot still gives it body and a touch of funk, but the American oak rounds it into something easy to sip at 43%. It makes a smart introduction to MHOBA's cane juice style without the sheer punch of the higher strength bottlings, a rewarding pour for drinkers who like characterful but approachable rum.
