Description
Mezcal Vago Espadin Elote is an Oaxacan joven mezcal made by Temo and Mateo Garcia, sons of the late maestro mezcalero Aquilino Garcia Lopez, at the family palenque in Candelaria Yegole in the Sola de Vega district. It starts as a single distilled Espadin (Agave angustifolia), copper distilled in the family style.
For the second distillation the maker suspends dried corn from his own farm, toasted on a wood fired comal, in the still so its aroma passes into the vapour. The corn is never fermented and is used only as a flavour infusion, so this remains a 100% agave spirit with no additives. The corn rounds the edges of the agave and lends a gentle mildness. Expect smoke, roasted corn and dry river stone on the nose, then sweet wood, honeycomb, green tropical fruit and smoke, with mint and papaya on a long finish. Bottled high at 50.3%.
