Description
Mezcal Vago bottles each spirit under the name of the maestro who made it, and this one comes from Emigdio Jarquin in Miahuatlan, Oaxaca, working in a traditional palenque with no additives. The agave is Arroqueno, Agave americana, a slow and very mature wild maguey known for deep cooked agave body and earthy weight. It is an artesanal joven, bottled unaged at 49.8% to carry the species at full intensity.
The agave is crushed on a stone tahona and distilled in a copper refrescadera, a still wrapped in a water cooled steel jacket that effectively performs two distillations in a single pass. The nose is clean and floral with salt, iodine and lime over baked sugar, while the palate turns savoury and earthy with potato, summer squash and corn, sweetened by brown sugar and a hint of sweet potato. Undiluted strength gives it real texture and grip.
