Scorpion Reposado is an Espadin mezcal made in small batches in Oaxaca by Doug French, a respected mezcalero who learned the trade from a third generation maker and also distills the Sierra Norte whiskey in the state. This reposado rests between two and eleven months in oak casks of under two hundred litres total volume, and each release is a single barrel bottling rather than a blend. A scorpion exoskeleton, without its sting and not for eating, sits at the base of every bottle in place of the more familiar worm.
Espadin, Agave angustifolia, brings its balanced foundation of sweet roasted agave and soft smoke, while the time in oak layers on honey and a dry, woody character. The nose leans golden, with lanolin and honey, and the palate runs dry and medium bodied with honey, grassy herbs, flax, caramel, salt and light spice, closing dry on oak and honey at 40 percent.
