Bright orchard fruit, mint and fresh anise meet gentle smoke in this Oaxacan ensamble of 70% Espadín and 30% Madrecuixe from Fruto del Sol, tahona crushed in Ejutla and bottled at 42%.
Description
Fruto del Sol, the fruit of the sun, is an ensamble of 70% Espadín and 30% Madrecuixe, a karwinskii form, made under official supervision in Ejutla, Oaxaca. Where most European-market mezcal is pure Espadín, the Madrecuixe share is the point of difference here, adding a mineral, herbal lift that turns the blend bright and fruit forward, a style aimed at drinkers who find heavier mezcals too smoky.
Production is fully traditional, with the agave roasted in a conical earth oven walled in masonry, crushed under a stone tahona, fermented in Sabino wood vats and twice distilled in copper. The result is led by clear orchard fruit and herbs, the fruity base joined by restrained smoke, cooked agave, mint and fresh anise, before a soft, warming finish. At 42% it stays gentle and modern, the Madrecuixe doing the work of complexity over smoke.
