A young Panama column still rum from the Dutch bottler Mezan, drawn from molasses and rested in ex-bourbon oak, light and gentle with honey, caramel, grape and a peppery, faintly Muscatel edge at 40%.
Description
Mezan Chiriqui is a three year old Panama rum from the Dutch independent bottler Mezan, named for the Chiriqui province in the country's west. Panama sits in the lighter Spanish-heritage tradition, and this fits the mould: molasses spirit run off a column still to a clean, high strength, so the character leans gentle and approachable rather than heavy or funky.
Bottled at 40% and matured in ex-bourbon oak, it stays light to the point of dilute. Soft honey, caramel and vanilla lead, with grape and a faint Muscatel lift and a little black pepper and young wood on a short finish. This is a relaxed, undemanding rum rather than a centrepiece, the sort of bottle that works as a gentle introduction or a mixer more than a slow neat pour. Drinkers who like delicate, easygoing styles will find it pleasant; those chasing depth or proof will want more.
