Mustiguillo makes Mestizaje from the local Bobal grape with Syrah and Garnacha, grown at around 800 metres on the El Terrerazo single estate in Valencia. Ten months in French oak give fresh raspberry, plum and a peppery, savoury edge.
Description
Mustiguillo built its reputation reviving Bobal, the local grape of inland Valencia, and earned single-estate Vino de Pago status for El Terrerazo in 2010. Mestizaje is the estate's organically farmed introduction to the range, led by Bobal with smaller portions of Syrah and Garnacha. The vineyards sit at around 800 metres, a high, continental site where cold nights preserve the bright acidity and aromatic lift that define Bobal. The wine spends ten months in French oak barrels, enough to add structure and a fine spice without covering the fruit, the gentle oxygen exchange through the staves softening the grape's naturally firm tannins. The colour is deep and youthful. The nose is fragrant, with fresh raspberry and plum lifted by a hint of orange peel and a peppery, savoury note from the Syrah. The palate is medium bodied and approachable, with fresh acidity, fine grained tannins and an earthy, spiced finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It is an adaptable food red, suiting grilled and roast meats, mushroom dishes and hard cheeses.
