Description
Mengoba was founded in 2007 in Carracedelo, in the Bierzo region, by the oenologist Gregory Pérez, who learned his trade in Bordeaux at estates including Cos d'Estournel before settling in Spain. This white is a single variety Godello, a grape suited to the region's cool, wet Atlantic influenced climate and its slate and clay soils, which together give ripe fruit with a firm mineral backbone. The wine spends ten months in old sherry oak casks, a gentle, oxidative form of ageing that adds a nutty, savoury complexity and a rounder texture rather than fresh wood flavour, while time on the lees builds weight through the middle. The colour is bright golden. The nose is layered, showing white peach, pear and citrus peel alongside almond, beeswax and a stony minerality. The palate is broad and textured but stays fresh, the ripe fruit balanced by good acidity and a long, saline, faintly nutty finish that reflects the cask ageing. Serve at around 11 to 12 degrees in a full white glass.
