Mengoba works old vineyards in D.O. Bierzo for this Godello and Doña Blanca white. Aged on its lees to build texture, it shows ripe pear, white peach and citrus, with a rounded feel and a fresh, mineral close from the region’s cool, humid climate.
Description
Mengoba Blanco is a white from D.O. Bierzo in Castilla y León, made by Bodega y Viñedos Mengoba from Godello and Doña Blanca grown on old vineyards. The winery sits near San Juan de Carracedo, in a district with a mild, moderate climate and high humidity, where annual temperatures average around 12 degrees and summers reach the low twenties. That relatively cool setting slows ripening and keeps acidity fresh in the fruit. The wine is aged on its lees, the spent yeast left in contact with the wine after fermentation, which adds weight, a fine creaminess and a savoury depth while protecting the wine from oxygen. Godello brings body and stone fruit, and Doña Blanca adds freshness and a floral edge, both drawn from mature vines with modest yields. The colour is bright straw, and the nose offers ripe pear, white peach and citrus over white flowers. The palate is rounded and textured from the lees but stays balanced by a clear mineral line, closing fresh and dry. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees in a white wine glass. It suits grilled white fish, shellfish, roast chicken and pork.
