Melior Verdejo is Matarromera’s fresh, young Rueda white, made by the Carlos Moro family. Grown under a continental climate on stony plateau soils, it shows juicy tropical fruit, green apple and citrus over the grape’s green, herbal snap.
Description
Melior Verdejo is made by Bodega Matarromera, the winery Carlos Moro founded in 1988 in Valbuena de Duero. The house is best known for Ribera del Duero reds, and its Verdejo comes from D.O. Rueda, Spain's home for the grape. Rueda sits on a high central plateau with a continental climate of hot days and cold nights, over free draining stony and sandy soils above limestone. That wide diurnal range preserves acidity and locks in Verdejo's green, herbal aromatics as the fruit ripens, while the poor soils keep yields modest. This is a young, fresh style, with the grapes fermented cool in stainless steel and no oak, so the primary fruit stays clear and lifted. Because Verdejo oxidises readily, protective handling in the cellar is key to holding that vibrancy. The wine is straw yellow with greenish reflections. The nose is clear and enveloping, led by juicy tropical fruit with green apple, citrus and a floral note. The palate is dry and vibrant, with fresh acidity, a light to medium body and the grape's faint bitter finish. Serve at 8 to 10 degrees. It is an easy aperitif and a match for fish, shellfish and salads.
