Description
Medine Estate is one of Mauritius's historic sugar estates, and Penny Blue is its single-cask rum line, this 2009 a fifteen year old single cask distilled from molasses on a column still and matured in ex-bourbon oak, bottled unsweetened at cask strength.
Fifteen years of tropical ageing gives real oak depth and a high angel's share. The nose is fresh and woody with apricot and orange, the palate brings more fresh, warm wood with a ginger lift, and the finish turns dry, warm and lightly smoky. At 60% it is full-bodied and intense, carrying the oak and orchard-fruit notes with weight while staying dry rather than sweet. A serious, well-aged single cask that shows the refined side of Mauritian molasses rum.
