Description
Mauro Vendimia Seleccionada is a Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León made by Bodegas Mauro at Tudela de Duero, near Valladolid. Since 1978 the winery has worked to two principles, expression of terroir and long ageing, and this single varietal Tempranillo is the fuller expression of both. The grapes come from vineyards of twenty to twenty five years farmed without herbicides, on the sandy and stony soils of the upper Duero. The high, continental plateau gives hot days and very cold nights, a wide diurnal range that ripens the fruit fully while holding colour and acidity. After fermentation the wine ages a long thirty two months in French and American oak. That extended élevage allows slow oxygen ingress through the staves, which polymerises the tannins into a smoother texture and layers in spice, vanilla and toast alongside the fruit. The colour is deep, near opaque red. The nose is intense, with ripe plum and blackberry over cocoa, vanilla and liquorice. The palate is full bodied and structured, the tannins firm but ripe, leading to a long, dark finish. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees, decanted, with red meat or game.
