Mauro Baynos is Mariano García’s Rioja, a Tempranillo and Graciano red from Baños de Rioja made with his sons. Organic and aged twenty months in French oak, it shows red berries, floral lift, spice and fine, ripe tannins.
Description
Mauro Baynos marks the arrival in Rioja of Mariano García, the winemaker behind the Mauro estate and a central figure in the modern reputation of Castilla y León. Made with his two sons in Baños de Rioja, it blends Tempranillo with Graciano, a variety prized in Rioja for its acidity, deep colour and aromatic, peppery lift. The grapes are farmed organically, and the wine ages for twenty months in French oak, longer and more measured than the brief, allowing slow oxygen exchange through the barrel to soften the tannins and add savoury, spiced complexity while the fruit holds its shape. Graciano lends backbone and freshness to the riper, red-fruited Tempranillo, the two grapes giving a wine that is structured but balanced. The colour is bright and deep. The nose leads with red berries and plum over floral notes, oak spice and dried herbs. The palate is mature and balanced, with very fine tannins, good acidity and a long, savoury finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanting half an hour ahead, with roast lamb, grilled beef or a plate of aged hard cheese.
